Call to Arms in the War on Women: The ACLU Oakland Branch Annual Meeting

The ACLU of Michigan Oakland Branch will convene for our annual meeting this year during a crucial time in national as well as Michigan politics.

The War on Women has reached melee status in many states, with dangerous bans on medical treatment for women in Arkansas, Mississippi, and North Dakota. This past year, Michigan has vaulted to the top of that list with outrageous, retrogressive legislation on women’s health.

Join the ACLU of Michigan Oakland Branch at our annual meeting to hear news from the front lines of the War on Women and join the discussion of how to fight back.

Our Executive Director Kary Moss will be joined by two leaders in the fight for a healthy Michigan, Lori Lamorand and Renee Chelian.

Renee Chelian founded Northland Family Planning Center after many years of work to protect women’s choice, both before and after the crucial Roe v. Wade decision. The NFPC has expanded since its inception to include three locations, and serves residents of the Detroit area as well as surrounding states. In addition to her focus on patient care and education, she continually stands up to assist in legally challenging threats to the right to choose.

Under Lori Lamerand's watch as President and CEO of Planned Parenthood Affiliates of Mid and South Michigan, the organization has grown from two sites serving 5,000 patients in 1995 to 15 centers serving nearly 60,000 today. For 18 years, she has also served on the Family Planning Advisory Council for the Michigan Department of Community Health, and she is recognized in Michigan as a leading expert on women’s reproductive health care.

We're proud to host three powerful women who are working hard to protect the health of women and their families in our state. But they can't do it alone.

Even now, our legislature is currently considering the License to Discriminate bill (SB 136) and other attempts that will hurt all women, especially the poor and women in rural areas.

The ACLU of Michigan is actively working with women like Renee and Lori for a healthy Michigan, and we need your help. We hope to see you Sunday, April 21 at 4 p.m. to talk about the change we need to see in our state.
