Immigrant Rights

The ACLU has been one of the nation's leading advocates for the rights of immigrants, refugees and non-citizens, challenging unconstitutional laws and practices, countering the myths upon which many of these laws are based. The ACLU supports rights for all people within the United States and is committed to expanding and enforcing the civil liberties and civil rights of non-citizens and to combating public and private discrimination against immigrants.

Fighting Back Against Indefinite Detention

It is hard to believe that ten years after the first "enemy combatants" were brought to the detention center in Guantanamo Bay, our civil liberties are still under attack.

Though President Obama promised to close the detention center on his second day of office, we are still waiting for him to keep his promise. Our search for accountability for those who interrogated detainees through torture seems further away than ever.

FOIA Documents From FBI Show Unconstitutional Racial Profiling

NEW YORK – The FBI has been targeting American communities for investigation based on race, ethnicity, national origin and religion according to documents released today by the American Civil Liberties Union and its affiliates that were obtained under the Freedom of Information Act.

The documents show that FBI analysts across the country are associating criminal behaviors with certain racial and ethnic groups and then using U.S. census data and other demographic information to map where those communities are located to investigate them.

Detroit – The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan and the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center sent letters to all Michigan jails today clarifying the obligations of local law enforcement with regards to “immigration detainers,” requests by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to hold people in jail who would otherwise be released.

Summer seems to have finally settled in just in time to soak up some sun in downtown Detroit's Hart Plaza.

This weekend, be sure to come out and show your support for civil liberties and visit our booth at Motor City Pride. We'll be at fairs and festivals across the state all summer, spreading awareness of civil liberties issues and telling our clients' stories.

We're recapping some of these stories in this week's Rights Review, including an interesting investigation into how private companies are tailoring (if not outright censoring) what you see on the internet.

DETROIT – The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan filed a Freedom of Information Act request today seeking records from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) regarding the illegal detention of a U.S. citizen and his mother who is a legal permanent resident. The Grand Rapids residents, who are Latino, were handcuffed and assaulted by ICE agents even though they produced driver’s licenses to prove their identities.

Arizona-Style Immigration Laws Would Hurt Michigan

Arizona-Style Immigration Laws Would Hurt Michigan

2011-03-16 00:00:00

In his State of the State address, Governor Snyder noted that welcoming immigrants to Michigan is essential for our economic recovery.

Apparently no one sent Rep. David Agema the memo.

Rep. Agema has introduced HB 4305, a state bill that requires police to demand the immigration papers they suspect of being in the country illegally.

Like the Arizona law it's based on, HB 4305 will encourage racial profiling, waste law enforcement resources, and discourage people and businesses from coming to Michigan.

Happy Constitution Day: Our Gift To You

Happy Constitution Day: Our Gift To You

Today is Constitution Day. In a lot of ways, it is a day to look backwards. To remember our Founding Fathers, and marvel at this document they created.

To celebrate past judicial opinions in which our Supreme Court interpreted this document to uphold and protect fundamental civil rights and civil liberties such as free speech, the free exercise of religion, and equal treatment.

It was supposed to be an inspiring and eventful week for three students visiting Detroit for the U.S. Social Forum.

They traveled from St. John’s University in New York to participate in workshops, lectures and even a massive march down Woodward Avenue. The progressive conference attracted more than 15,000 attendees from across the country for what shaped up to be an exciting and inspiring event.

Ann Arbor Gets It Right On Immigration

Ann Arbor Gets It Right On Immigration

Roland Leggett, ACLU of Michigan field organizer

Last night, the Ann Arbor City Council sent a strong message to legislators across the country by becoming the first Michigan city to go on record opposing Arizona’s anti-immigrant law.

The approved resolution clearly states that racial profiling isn’t true immigration reform and has no place in our state.
