Religious Liberty

The right to practice religion, or no religion at all, is among the most fundamental of the freedoms guaranteed by the Bill of Rights. The ACLU of Michigan Howard L. Simon Religious Liberty Project works to ensure that this essential freedom is protected. The Constitution’s framers understood that religious liberty could flourish only if the government leaves religion alone, and we are dedicated to maintaining that separation to preserve religious freedom for all people.

My Christmas, Protected by the ACLU

My family celebrates Christmas in a big way. The lights. The tree. The food. We even hang stockings over the fireplace and listen to the Charlie Brown Christmas album. No kidding!

I know that some of my friends raise their eyebrows at my candy-cane-and-hot-chocolate enthusiasm, but I can’t help it. I love the holiday season!

ACLU Seeks Records About FBI Collection of Racial and Ethnic Data in Michigan

DETROIT – The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan today asked the FBI to turn over records related to the agency’s collection and use of race and ethnicity data in local communities.

According to a 2008 FBI operations guide, FBI agents have the authority to collect information about and map so-called “ethnic-oriented” businesses, behaviors, lifestyle characteristics and cultural traditions in communities with concentrated ethnic populations.

Long before I knew Kerouac, Bukowski, or Nabokov, I knew Dr. Seuss. “The Cat in the Hat” and “Green Eggs and Ham” were staples during my childhood.

The fact that I attended a Lutheran Parochial school and Dr. Seuss just happened to be Lutheran only gave me more opportunities to get better acquainted with his strange characters and rhyming prose.

The simplicity of his work guided me at a time when I barely understood the English language. Along with millions of other children, Theodor Seuss Geisel helped me make sense of it all in a completely nonsensical way.

Ferndale Church Has the Right to Help Poor People, ACLU Tells Court

2009-09-24 00:00:00

DETROIT — In a friend-of-the-court brief filed on behalf of the First Baptist Church of Ferndale, the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan has urged the Oakland County Circuit Court not to interfere with the church's mission of serving the poor.  A group of Ferndale residents, citing a zoning ordinance, recently asked the court to deny the church the ability to use its own building to provide charitable social services to poor people.  The ACLU argued in its brief that denying the church permission to help poor people would violate the Religious Land Use Act of 2000.

Terrorism Finance Laws Undermine Michigan Muslims' Religious Freedom, Says ACLU

U.S. terrorism finance laws and policies unfairly prevent Muslims around the nation from practicing their religion through charitable giving and undermine America’s diplomatic efforts in Muslim countries, according to an American Civil Liberties Union report released last night. The 164-page report, “Blocking Faith, Freezing Charity,” is the first comprehensive report that documents the serious effects of Bush administration terrorism finance laws on Muslim communities, including those in Michigan.

Jailed Preacher's Appeal Generates Overwhelming Support Across the Country

It's not every day you find that the American Jewish Congress, the National Association of Evangelicals, the A.M.E. Baptist Church, Michigan law faculty, and the Thomas Jefferson Center for the Protection of Free Expression all agree with one another.

But this broad coalition of religious groups, law professors, and free speech advocates have come together to support a fundamental American principle: a preacher should not be sent to prison for writing a newspaper editorial that uses Biblical language to criticize a judge.

Denying Church Right to Help Homeless Violates Federal Law, ACLU Tells City of Ferndale

DETROIT— In a letter today, the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan urged Ferndale city officials not to interfere with the First Baptist Church of Ferndale’s religious mission of serving the poor. The city is currently reconsidering its decision to allow the church to provide social services. The ACLU warned that denying the church permission would violate the Religious Land Use Act.
