Women’s Rights

Liberty doesn’t have a gender, and the ACLU works to keep it that way. Our commitment to women’s rights aims to ensure that women and their families can enjoy the benefits of full equality and participation in every sphere of society.

Ever wonder who’s behind the work here at the ACLU of Michigan? In our new blog series Five Questions, ACLU of Michigan staff will talk about the incredible day-to-day work defending civil liberties.

We'll be asking our fellows to speak about their experiences in the office as well as the passions that drove them to engage in the social-justice work in which they are currently engaged. Today we're sitting down with Legal Fellow Linda Jordan.

What is being a legal fellow at the ACLU of Michigan like?

Fewer Options for Proper Reproductive Health Care

Fewer Options for Proper Reproductive Health Care

As a woman, I hope for unfettered access to the medical care that is best for me and my body.

Which is exactly why the growth of hospitals bound by religious belief is particularly harrowing.

Ascension Health—the nation’s largest and most profitable Catholic Health system—is in the process of acquiring Crittenton Hospital in Rochester, MI, which is the last independent non-profit hospital in Southeast Michigan.

My Fears for a Future Son

My Fears for a Future Son

2015-01-13 00:00:00

At 33 years old, my biological clock isn’t just ticking any longer—its clamoring at me.

Like some incessant internal siren, it wails at me day after day, admonishing me that it’s time I started seriously considering having children.

But even over the wailing of the siren, I hear another sound: The voice of my mother, who spent much of my life reiterating to me that I had no business having children unless I was sure I could take care of them.

Take Action: Tell Your Senator Religion Isn’t a License to Discriminate

2014-12-05 00:00:00

Yesterday, the full House voted along party lines to pass the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, only hours after it was reported from committee.

If the Senate fails to stop this poorly written bill, people will be able to take advantage and claim that their religion gives them the right to ignore critical laws – laws that protect against child labor, domestic violence and discrimination.

ACLU Urges Michigan to Investigate Catholic Hospital’s Ban on Common Birth Control Procedure

2014-12-04 00:00:00

DETROIT — The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan in a letter today called on the state licensing and regulatory agency to compel a hospital near Flint, Mich., to lift its faith-based ban on a common birth control procedure because the prohibition needlessly exposes women patients to health risks.

Don't Allow Religion as an Excuse to Ignore the Law

Don't Allow Religion as an Excuse to Ignore the Law

2014-12-01 00:00:00

Freedom of religion is one of our fundamental rights as Americans. That’s why it’s protected in the state and federal constitutions.

However, this week, our elected officials will consider broad new legislation – the Michigan Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) – that would put an individual’s religious beliefs ahead of the common good.

This poorly written bill would allow people take advantage of these flaws and claim that their religion gives them the right to ignore critical laws – laws that protect against child labor, domestic violence and discrimination.
