Workplace Rights

The workplace can be intimidating, and it may seem as if the boss holds all the cards. In fact, Michigan and U.S. law guarantee certain rights for all workers, including the right to a minimum wage, limits on working hours, the right to a safe workplace, and the right to join or form a union. The ACLU is committed to worker rights and has a long history of defending and preserving the rights of workers.

LANSING, Mich. - In honor of National Coming Out Day, local advocacy groups launched the “Don’t Change Yourself. Change the Law” campaign today to raise awareness that in Michigan you can still be fired if your employer even thinks you are gay.

The Unity Michigan Coalition, a group of six organizations dedicated to ensuring equality for all Michiganders, announced the campaign to urge the Michigan legislature to update the state’s nondiscrimination law, which currently doesn’t protect lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender citizens against discrimination.

The Michigan Legislature has had a long vacation, but as the summer winds down it's time to review upcoming legislation. During July and August, committee hearings and other discussions have been going on but no legislation has been voted on.

What follows is a list of the bills currently on the House and Senate calendars that the ACLU is watching.

Another busy week in the offices of the ACLU of Michigan!

This week, we were in court defending the rights of seriously ill patients and caregivers against the city of Livonia's ordinance that bans medical marijuana.

In other news, we consider who decides how much privacy the public deserves and why the Michigan Department of Corrections doesn't like parades.

On this date in 1964, President John F. Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act into law to address gender-based discrimination in the workplace.

Now nearly 50 years since those words were spoken, women still only earn about $.77 for every dollar a man makes.

In other stories this week, our LGBT Project celebrates its 10th anniversary with a profile in PrideSource and the University of Michigan revises its procedure for banning people from campus.

Legislative Update

Negotiating this newly configured legislature is tricky.

The 2010 elections ushered a class of new, remarkably conservative freshman into the state house. Both legislative chambers and the governor’s mansion are in Republican control, with the state House in particular taking a notably conservative turn.

While some of the new legislators are unknowns, many unfortunately fall into the “hostile” category on many progressive issues—choice, LGBT equality, and collective bargaining to name a few.
