Major Legal Win for Water Crisis Victims As Federal Court Orders Bottled Water Delivery to Flint Residents

DETROIT–Federal judge David M. Lawson has ordered Michigan state officials and the City of Flint to deliver bottled water door-to-door to homes in Flint, a victory for residents who have been living without access to safe drinking water for more than two years. Until this point, the burden of tracking down safe drinking water every day has been resting on residents, an exhausting struggle that has disrupted their lives and sense of normalcy.

FLINT On behalf of 15 named plaintiffs and tens of thousands of schoolchildren in Flint, the ACLU of Michigan and the Education Law Center filed a class-action civil rights lawsuit in Flint today, documenting ongoing violations of federal education laws by the State of Michigan and local school authorities.

One year ago, on Sept. 15, 2015, a press conference was held on the lawn in front of Flint City Hall. Gathered before a small throng of reporters were members of Flint’s Coalition for Clean Water, scientists Marc Edwards and Siddhartha Roy of Virginia Tech and the ACLU of Michigan.

Edwards and Roy were there to announce the results of a citizen-led study that had found lead levels in Flint’s water that were nearly double what the city and the state estimated.
