DETROIT — The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan in a letter today called on the state licensing and regulatory agency to compel a hospital near Flint, Mich., to lift its faith-based ban on a common birth control procedure because the prohibition needlessly exposes women patients to health risks.

Don’t Close the Courthouse Doors on Muslim Women

Don’t Close the Courthouse Doors on Muslim Women

It takes an incredible amount of courage to face one’s attacker in court – to look them in the eye and tell the truth as you have experienced it. According to one study, between five and twenty-five percent of rape cases are reported to the police, and only one in five of this small percentage actually reaches trial. It is hard enough for survivors to come forward. We should not erect additional barriers to prevent individuals from exercising their fundamental right to access our justice system.

DNR Right to Abandon Park Policy

DNR Right to Abandon Park Policy

2002-10-01 00:00:00

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has done something that government agencies sometimes are reluctant to do: Abandon a rule that was unfair, ineffective and unneeded.

The DNR has dropped a policy, revised in 1999, that required religious groups that wished to "solicit, canvass or proselytize" in a state park to submit a written request for the activity and require participants to wear identification tags.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has tossed out the policy that sparked a dispute over religious activities at Fort Custer Recreation Area this summer.

"This makes it clear that a state park is the same type of public forum for free speech as the courthouse steps," said James Rodbard, an attorney for the Southwest Michigan Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union. "The people of Michigan should feel secure that they are free to exercise their rights of free speech and worship."
