Last week, thousands of Michiganders spoke out against House Bills 4770 and 4771, urging Governor Snyder to do the right thing for Michigan families and veto this bad legislation.

This morning, Governor Snyder asked the State House to provide a specific clarification that the colleges and universities are exempt from the ban on domestic partner benefits that House Bills 4770 and 4771.

DETROIT – The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan today urged Governor Rick Snyder on behalf of four families to veto legislation that would ban public employers from providing domestic partner benefits. House Bills 4770 and 4771 passed the State House and Senate late last week.

GRAND RAPIDS – The American Civil Liberties Union and the ACLU of Michigan welcomed today’s announcement by Mona Shores High School in Muskegon, Michigan that it will allow students to vote for a “prom court” this spring rather than a prom queen or king.

The announcement comes after controversy erupted in the fall when the school denied transgender student Oak Reed the chance to be homecoming king.

Public universities can’t force student counselors to change their views, but can require them to follow curriculum.

NEW YORK – The American Civil Liberties Union and the ACLU of Michigan filed a friend-of-the-court brief today supporting Eastern Michigan University’s (EMU’s) right to remove from its counseling program a graduate student who refused to counsel lesbian, gay and bisexual clients on any issues relating to same-sex relationships during her clinical training. The graduate student, Julea Ward, was in training to become a school counselor.

Admittedly, it’s hard to have a new outlook on anything in this state other than the economic crisis that we’re facing, but lucky for us, guaranteeing the fundamental freedoms that this country was founded upon doesn’t cost a thing.

In fact, civil libertie could save the state a lot of money.
