Roe v. Wade Decision's Promise of Abortion Rights in Jeopardy in Michigan

2016-01-22 00:00:00

Today marks the 43rd anniversary of Roe v. Wade—the landmark Supreme Court decision that guarantees all women a constitutional right to an abortion in the United States. Yet for many reproductive rights advocates, Roe day has become a day of concern, not celebration.

Throughout 2015, black students across the country were forced to face down racial hostility and violence on college campuses that seemed drawn straight from the Jim Crow era.  In addition, a leading presidential candidate spent much of the year promising to build a wall to keep out Mexican immigrants.

On Thursday, Dec.3, the first of three victims of the shooting rampage at a Planned Parenthood in Colorado Springs was laid to rest. While our thoughts and prayers were with the victims who were killed or injured, the Senate leadership was doubling down on its intent to divest millions of Americans access to necessary healthcare by defunding Planned Parenthood

The Jessica Mann Story

The Jessica Mann Story

Recently, a Catholic hospital denied permission to Jessica Mann, a pregnant Michigan woman with a life-threatening brain tumor, to have her tubes tied after she delivers her baby--despite her doctor's recommendation. As a result, a pregnant woman could be put at risk because a hospital has chosen religious belief over sound medicine. This is Jessica's story.

A decision about having a baby or having an abortion is a deeply personal, private decision best left to a woman, her family, and her doctor. Yet some politicians remain obsessed with interfering.

Abortion is one of the most common medical procedures performed today, and it’s incredibly safe. But laws that make it difficult if not impossible for a woman to get an abortion if she needs one, particularly if she is poor, are increasing at an alarming pace.

In 2009 the ACLU of Michigan successfully lobbied for an amendment to Michigan’s Elliot-Larsen Civil Rights Act that prevents employers from treating pregnant employees differently from other employees who are similarly situated in their ability or inability to work.

Despite this provision, Hope Healthcare Center refused to accommodate Asia Myers, a pregnant employee with physician-imposed temporary restrictions due to pregnancy complications, even thought it routinely provides accommodations to non-pregnant employees with similar restrictions.

Woman Cannot Be Ordered To Have Baby During Divorce

Woman Cannot Be Ordered To Have Baby During Divorce

A survivor of domestic violence who was leaving her husband decided to seek an abortion. Her ex sued for divorce, and as part of the case sought a court order forcing her to complete the pregnancy.

In January 2013 the ACLU of Michigan represented the woman in opposing the husband’s motion.

The court agreed with the ACLU’s argument that the woman’s former partner had no right to control her body or prevent her from terminating the pregnancy.
