Attacks on Women’s Reproductive Health in the Name of Religion

In several federal lawsuits filed in Michigan, private employers challenged the new requirement under the Affordable Care Act (or “Obamacare”) that all employee health insurance plans include birth control prescription coverage.

These employers argued that the contraceptive mandate violated their right to religious liberty. Congress added the contraception prescription requirement to address discrimination against women, who have historically paid much higher out-of-pocket costs than men for reproductive health care.

As early as next week, the Michigan Legislature could vote on a proposal that would ban Michigan health care policies from covering abortion care, making comprehensive health care near impossible to obtain for a woman in our state.

Unlike past attacks on reproductive rights, this one isn’t even pretending to care about “protecting women’s health.”

Instead, this proposal blatantly singles out women and denies them coverage for life-saving healthcare services, with no exception for rape, incest or the life and health of a mother.

Texas: the state where everything is bigger, including anti-woman legislation.

It seems as though there is a competition between states of who can legislate the most extreme violations on women’s health.

After a slow start, Texas jumped to the top of that disturbing list this week, as legislators called a special session just to push bills restricting women's rights into law.

Call to Arms in the War on Women: The ACLU Oakland Branch Annual Meeting

The ACLU of Michigan Oakland Branch will convene for our annual meeting this year during a crucial time in national as well as Michigan politics.

The War on Women has reached melee status in many states, with dangerous bans on medical treatment for women in Arkansas, Mississippi, and North Dakota. This past year, Michigan has vaulted to the top of that list with outrageous, retrogressive legislation on women’s health.

I don't know about you, but I'm tired of moving one step forward and two steps back on reproductive freedom.

Just yesterday, Michigan House Speaker Jase Bolger, a Republican, publically proclaimed mandatory transvaginal ultrasounds for women seeking abortions have no place in his House.

They did it behind closed doors.

Yesterday, while the police locked the public out of the Capitol, the Michigan Legislature sneaked a set of extremist add-ons onto bills meant to reform Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance.

Provisions tacked on to Senate Bill 1293 and 1294 contain extreme measures that would ban any health care policy issued in Michigan from providing abortion coverage, making comprehensive health care near impossible to obtain for a woman in our state.

Whether and when to have children is about the most deeply personal and intimate decision a person can make. When we chose to start a family many years ago, my husband and I discussed our own health and energy and the state of our relationship and our finances.

As people of faith and stewards of God’s creation, we talked about religious and moral considerations. While we spoke about these personal, intimate questions, I didn’t expect my boss to insist on weighing in on that discussion.

As Michigan legislators saw other states quickly upping the ante with extreme war on women policies like personhood amendments and vaginal probe laws, they must have grown tired of our state merely being a face in the crowd.

So what else is there to do but dole out their own special brand of bat-crackers crazy in the form of Michigan's outrageous, monster War on Women Mega Bill.

We’ve written about the War on Women Mega Bill before, which combines every attack on women's health into the greatest assault on reproductive rights in our state’s history.

Initially, we tried to take the more traditional routes: we packed committee rooms with supporters but were denied the opportunity to testify; we proposed amendments to the bills only to witness our female, pro-choice allies in the House get banned from speaking; we recruited credible experts to testify against the bills only to witness their words fall on deaf ears.

It soon became obvious that we had to get creative.

Abortion has never been “my issue”. But a recent trip to Lansing on June 12, 2012 changed all of that. On that day, an activist and advocate was born. As I watched the House Committee on Health Policy hearing on the abortion omnibus package of bills, I saw only men, male after male, talk about what we should do about women’s reproductive health. My frustration level rose steadily. When Chairwoman Gail Haines noted that that she could see no other business, even though over ninety women were staring at her, waiting their turn to testify, my anger went through the roof.

It looks like some Michigan politicians want to “play doctor” and take away a woman’s ability to make personal, private medical decisions for herself.

In June, Michigan vaulted to the top of the list of states with outrageous, regressive legislation on women's health by placing a monster omnibus package of bills (House Bills 5711, 5712 and 5713) on the fast-track to becoming law.

The War on Women Mega Bill was passed in the House and if it survives in the Senate, it would effectively make safe abortion services inaccessible in the state.
