Reproductive Health: Not Just a Women’s Issue

Reproductive Health: Not Just a Women’s Issue

In a sea of Planned-Parenthood-pink during a visit with Michigan Sen. Debbie Stabenow during the Stand Up for Women’s Health Lobby Day, a young man raised his hand and asked the million dollar question – why should men be involved in the fight for women’s reproductive health?

It was a good question, with a complicated answer, but one that would be a game-changer for women’s equality.

Sen. Stabenow answered that men have to share responsibility for birth control in a relationship and men have to be concerned about sexually transmitted infections.

On the afternoon of February 18th, the House of Representatives hit a new low by passing the Pence Amendment.

This extreme legislation would eliminate federal funding for all Planned Parenthood services, penalizing the organization for using its own, non-federal funds to provide abortions.

If passed by the Senate, this measure would immediately jeopardize the health of millions of women, men and teens who rely on Planned Parenthood to provide basic healthcare services.

In last week’s Senate Judiciary Committee meeting, tempers flared as anti-choice organizations voiced their support a controversial bill.

Senator Kuipers’ Senate Bill 1283 would add language to the state’s Public Health Code, essentially asking medical providers to use their most technologically advanced ultrasound machines for abortion procedures.

The pro-choice movement in Michigan has been on the defense in our state legislature for the past ten years. There has not been a single significant pro-choice bill signed into law during this period, and the pro-choice advocates have spent too much time and energy debating the intransigent issue that is abortion.

A couple of years ago, we worked with Planned Parenthood and the wider pro-choice coalition in Lansing to move the debate away from abortion and toward common sense solutions to reduce the need for abortions – solutions we believe everyone could agree upon.

LANSING — At a hearing today, the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan and dozens of supporters of informed reproductive healthcare urged House Judiciary Committee members to support a 15-bill Prevention First package (HB 5155-5165 HR 118 -120, HCR 23). The package of bills was introduced in the State House and Senate in June 2009.

In the waning days of Women’s History Month, I’ve tried to sit down and take stock of some of the progress that we have made. It is of course important to recognize that we have made some important strides in areas such as reproductive health, violence against women, and employment discrimination. But we still have a long way to go.

Happy Anniversary Birth Control!

Happy Anniversary Birth Control!

Happy Anniversary Birth Control! Not the anniversary of the invention of the “pill” or the “IUD”, but of an individual’s right to actually obtain and use contraceptives. It seems incredible, but that right was only fully granted in 1972, when the US Supreme Court in Eisenstadt v. Baird decided that it was unconstitutional to deny contraceptives to unmarried persons.

LANSING — Planned Parenthood Affiliates of Michigan and the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan are deeply disappointed, today, in the Michigan House for once again playing politics with women’s health and passing Senate Bill 776. The groups vowed to hold legislators accountable for their SB 776 vote in the upcoming election and urged the governor to veto SB 776.

Take Action Here: Tell your representative and speaker of the house to stop pandering to anti-choice forces

You can tell it’s an election year in Michigan. Our state legislators, including House Speaker Andy Dillon (D-Redford Twp.), are cowering to anti-choice forces that seek to limit a woman's access to reproductive healthcare in Michigan.

State legislators are pushing through an unnecessary and wasteful bill which would prohibit abortion methods that are already banned by the ultra-conservative U.S. Supreme Court.
