ACLU Seeks Records About Emergency Financial Manager Law

DETROIT – The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan filed 13 Freedom of Information Act requests today seeking records regarding the emergency financial manager law passed last month. The requests were sent to the state superintendent, treasury department, bill sponsors, Detroit Public Schools and several cities that currently employ emergency financial managers.

Ann Arbor, MI — The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan is gravely concerned by plans to evict about 20 residents of the local homeless encampment Camp Take Notice from public land near Interstate I-94 and Ann Arbor-Saline Road. The Michigan State Police posted signs in the encampment yesterday warning residents that they must leave or risk being arrested for trespassing.

Detroit – The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan filed a federal lawsuit today challenging the Detroit Police Department's 2008 raid of the Contemporary Art Institute of Detroit. During the raid more than one hundred innocent people were detained, searched, and charged with loitering. In addition, more than 40 legally parked cars were seized and not released until their owners paid nearly $1000.

Detroit –The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan today released a comprehensive report entitled “Reclaiming Michigan’s Throwaway Kids: Students Trapped in the School-to-Prison Pipeline,” which documents a trend amongst school districts to enforce severe disciplinary policies and practices that push children permanently out of the classroom without regard for the long-term impact. The school-to-prison pipeline refers to the national trend of criminalizing, rather than educating, our children.
