People with disabilities are too often treated as second class, shunned and segregated by physical barriers and social stereotypes. They are discriminated against in employment, schools, and housing, robbed of their personal autonomy, sometimes even hidden away and forgotten by the larger society. Ensuring equal access for those with disabilities is a core guiding principle of the ACLU of Michigan.

Today, members of Congress finally heard testimony on the water crisis in Detroit and Flint. The briefing could not be more timely. Secret negotiations are currently underway, some regarding the creation of the Great Lakes Water Authority and others to determine how much higher water and sewer rates will climb this year.

In a ruling that should outrage anyone passionate about education, this month the Michigan Court of Appeals ruled that the State of Michigan has no legal obligation to provide a quality public education to students in Highland Park.
