The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan is seeking undergraduate interns for the 2025 summer season. The American Civil Liberties Union is the largest and oldest organization in the US dedicated to protecting and expanding the civil rights and liberties of all people in this nation through litigation, public education, advocacy, and organizing. The ACLU’s work addresses a wide range of constitutional and civil rights issues, including criminal law reform, immigrants’ rights, racial justice, LGBTQ+ rights, freedom of speech, religious freedom, reproductive freedom, voting rights, police misconduct, prisoners’ rights, and privacy.
We are seeking students from a wide range of disciplines, including public policy, communications, political science, social work, and pre-law. In addition to a vibrant and innovative caseload, the ACLU of Michigan offers interns a rewarding summer experience, including opportunities to attend court hearings, social activities, supervision, and mentorship. This internship position is interdisciplinary, and interns will work with our legal, political, and communications departments. Specific projects may include work related to our democracy project, legal intake, legal issue research, legislative research, and drafting communications assets.
Qualifications:
• Must be a current undergraduate student during the time of the internship
• Strong organization, writing, and communication skills
• Commitment to civil liberties and civil rights
• Respect for differences of race, ethnicity, age, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, religion, ability, and socio-economic circumstance
• Familiarity with computer databases preferred
• Dependable and motivated to seek feedback, ask questions, and work through challenges
Stipend: We encourage all applicants to seek internship funds through their educational institution. If you are unable to secure funding from your school for a public interest internship, the ACLU can provide funding to make this opportunity more feasible for students who would otherwise be required to seek paid employment over the summer and to help off-set any costs associated with housing and/or travel to Detroit. Please indicate in your cover letter if you are interested in ACLU funding.
Location: This internship is hybrid, requiring some in-person attendance in Detroit.
Commitment: Our summer undergraduate internship requires a 10- to 12-week commitment. Depending on organizational needs, we may offer one full- or two part-time internships. Please indicate in your cover letter if you are interested in a full-time or part-time internship, or both.
Applications: To apply, submit your resume and a cover letter by email to acluinternship@aclumich.org.
Please include in the email subject line: “Last name, First name, Summer 2025 Undergrad Internship Application.”
In your cover letter, please respond to the following:
• What ACLU issue(s) do you find most important or interesting and why?
• Are you interested in a full-time or part-time internship or both?
Deadline: Applications will be accepted until March 28, 2025.
