FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DETROIT, Mich. - The ACLU of Michigan celebrates Pride Month by unveiling a vibrant collection of pro-LGBTQ+ banners in the first-floor windows of its office on Woodward Avenue in midtown Detroit. The display is a show of unwavering support for a community that continues to face vicious attacks across the country.
Along with various LGBTQ+ flag designs, the banners include powerful Pride messages in several languages, which can be translated with the QR code also on display. Passersby are encouraged to take selfies and show their support for the LGBTQ+ community by sharing their photos online and tagging the ACLU with #ACLUMiPRIDE.
Jay Kaplan, ACLU of Michigan Nancy Katz & Margo Dichtelmiller LGBTQ+ Rights Project Staff Attorney, released this statement:
“While our ongoing support and work on behalf of the LGBTQ+ community is year-round, Pride is an uplifting time to celebrate all that we have accomplished together. After decades of fighting for explicit protections from discrimination for LGBTQ people in our state civil rights act, we succeeded. Thanks to LGBTQ+ coalition partners and allies speaking out, courts across the state must address transgender people with their preferred pronouns. While we celebrate these victories, we cannot let up. Our rights are on the line this November, and everyone must show up and vote their values to ensure that our wins stay won.”
Loren Khogali, ACLU of Michigan Executive Director, released this statement:
“Our Pride is on display to honor the diverse voices and identities that comprise the LGBTQ+ community and strengthen our democracy. We are steadfast in our fight to advance and protect the rights of LGBTQ+ people in the face of persistent nationwide attacks. We will continue to fight book bans targeting LGBTQ+ representation. We will continue to fight the ruthless attacks on trans children. Join us in celebrating Pride by speaking out, showing up, and voting this November.”
