FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DETROIT – The ACLU of Michigan applauds voters for sending a clear message this election: protecting and expanding civil liberties in our state is a priority. Michiganders expanded the pro-abortion rights, pro-voting rights, and pro-LGBTQ+ rights majority for the Michigan Supreme Court.
The Michigan Supreme Court makes decisions that impact our daily lives. The ACLU of Michigan, the American Civil Liberties Union, and the ACLU Voter Education Fund invested more than $2 million in the Michigan Supreme Court race to educate voters to ensure they could make an informed vote this election season. The ACLU public education campaign included sending direct mail to almost 45,000 households and reaching 3.8 million voters via radio and digital advertising.
“Throughout our state, Michiganders have made it abundantly clear that they want their rights and liberties protected,” said Loren Khogali, executive director of the ACLU of Michigan. “Voters representing all corners of Michigan and our rich diversity understood how crucial this race was to ensure that their hard-won rights stay won. They showed up in resounding numbers – breaking records in early voting. We thank our incredibly hardworking election officials, volunteers, and everyone who made their voices heard at the ballot box. These wins will reinvigorate us in our ongoing work to ensure reproductive rights, voting rights, LGBTQ+ rights, disability rights, and more are not only protected but expanded for all Michiganders.”
