FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

DETROIT - As the Michigan House of Representatives has adjourned for the year, we are left reflecting on the stark gap between what could have been and what was delivered. We know the threats looming on the horizon for Michiganders under a weaponized Trump White House: attacks on bodily autonomy, targeting vulnerable populations, undermining election integrity, exploitation of our judicial system and more all hang in the balance.

Despite the clear need for desperate action on these critical issues affecting our state, enough legislators chose to prioritize ego, political gamesmanship, and obstruction over the well-being and dignity of the people they are sworn to serve.

These lawmakers allowed personal pride and petty politics to derail progress. Michiganders—our families, our neighbors, the most vulnerable in our communities—are the ones who bear the burden of this inaction.

This failure to pass essential legislation is not just a failure of governance; it is a betrayal to Michiganders who count on their leaders to protect their rights, their safety, and their future. At the ACLU, we believe in justice and equality for all, and we will not be silent as partisan politics tramples the rights and needs of the people of Michigan.

We remain steadfast in our commitment to defending and preserving the rights and liberties that the Constitution guarantees to everyone—whatever the future may bring.
