DETROIT, MI – The Michigan Senate has passed the Michigan Voting Rights Act, clearing the way for the House to take the final step in securing expanded protections for Michigan voters.
Despite recent progress to expand voting rights for Michiganders, many people still face barriers to the ballot box, including voters of color, voters with disabilities, and voters whose first language is not English. Our state and country are stronger when everyone has equal access to the ballot box. By acting to pass the Michigan Voting Rights Act, the Senate did its part to ensure a strong electorate and legal protections for all voters.
Recent polling conducted on behalf of the Legal Defense Fund shows that more than three-quarters of Michigan voters support passage of a Michigan Voting Rights Act, and this includes robust support across race and party lines. By overwhelming margins, Michigan voters would like to see their state legislators make this legislation a priority.
The ACLU of Michigan, in partnership with Promote the Vote Michigan, the Legal Defense Fund, the Campaign Legal Center, the Brennan Center for Justice, the Michigan League of Conservation Voters, League of Women Voters of Michigan, Voters Not Politicians, All Voting is Local Action Michigan, the Michigan Unitarian Universalist Social Justice Network, Fair Elections Center, Rising Voices, Black Voters Matter, and Fems for Change now call on the House to pass the Michigan Voting Rights Act without delay.
