FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DETROIT, Mich. — The following statement was issued by the coalition Reproductive Freedom for All in response to a leaked draft opinion overturning Roe v. Wade, authored by Justice Alito from the U.S. Supreme Court:
American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan (ACLU) Executive Director Loren Khogali released this statement:
“If the Supreme Court overturns Roe, every person in Michigan will be impacted. We must have the right to make reproductive health care decisions for ourselves including when and if to have a child. To keep abortion and reproductive freedoms legal in Michigan we are taking up this fight ourselves to put Reproductive Freedom for All on the November ballot.”
Michigan Voices Executive Director Sommer Foster released this statement:
“The news about the draft Supreme Court decision should be a wake-up call for everyone that believes in reproductive freedom in Michigan. If the Supreme Court does overturn Roe, there is a 1931 ban that criminalizes abortion in our state. The deeply personal decision to have an abortion should not be subject to interference from politicians or judges. It is important that we work together to pass the Reproductive Freedom for All Amendment to make sure the right to access an abortion is protected in the Michigan Constitution.”
Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan Executive Director Nicole Wells Stallworth released this statement:
“Though we are sorely disappointed, we are not surprised as we have anticipated this outcome. It’s a disastrous outcome for every person in our country. The fact remains that abortion bans are harmful, inhumane, and discriminatory. The unfortunate reality is that our fate is now in our own hands; the U.S. Supreme Court will not protect us. Our campaign to enshrine right to an abortion in the Michigan Constitution is essential, and we must remain vigilant and energized to see it through to the finish because the clock is ticking.”
